Some people meditate; I find my center at the library. Libraries are my Disneyland. I write in them, read in them, escape, explore, daydream, and mini-vacation in them. I love libraries so much that, earlier this year, I posted in my blog I’d like to visit a new local library each week.
Seven months(?!) later, I’m finally making good on Library-Hopping Adventure #2. 🙂
Today I visited East Anaheim Library, one of nearly a hundred libraries in Orange County and Anaheim’s newest one, remodeled from what used to be a medical center and featuring the requisite palm tree.
East Anaheim Library shares a building with the Anaheim Police Department, so out front there’s a lovely little memorial to police dogs.
I got choked up reading the list of canine heroes’ names.
Just inside the front entrance, really high high ceilings and industrial style architecture let in the light of a beautiful, sunny morning.
Here’s the cozy back table where I spent three hours writing and reading next to a view of trees and. . . major freeways. The muffled rush of traffic was easy to habituate to, though; after a while, it sounded like ocean waves. Pictured: my trusty red backpack and document holder for transporting my tools of the trade: laptop, manuscript, folder for completed pages, pens, highlighter, water, snack.
For what it’s worth, the library bathrooms were also extraordinarily clean, but I didn’t take a picture of those. 😀
Here’s to libraries and visiting more of them. They’re good for the soul.

What a beautiful library! And Anaheim is only about 15 minutes away from me. I’ll have to visit. I’ve volunteered at the Katie Wheeler Library in Irvine for the past two years. Libraries are my special places, too 🙂

Oh, wow, you work at Katie Wheeler Library. I really want to visit that one because #1 it’s lovely, and #2 because it’s open on Sundays! Question: Who was Katie Wheeler?

It’s such a beautiful little library. And the grounds are lovely, too. Great for a sunny day! And Katie Wheeler was the granddaughter of James H. Irvine, who was born and raised in the original ranch house, which was destroyed in a fire in 1965. The library is a replica of the original home!

Love the memorial for the police dogs!
It’s funny because I tend to just stop in the library and pick up the books I requested that are ready for me, browse the shelves, etc. I don’t tend to settle in. Maybe I’ll try it for NaNo….
I find traffic noise turns to white noise for me after awhile.

Some libraries feel more comfortable to write in than others, but why not give it a try? For NaNo maybe you and other local writers could reserve a study room for write-ins. 🙂

Ever since I read your first post about library hopping, I’ve wanted to try it, but I still haven’t gotten the chance to. It’s still on my to-do list. Thanks for the reminder. 😀
