“My Intimidating TBR” Tag & A New YA Release I’m Dying to Read

My new friend, Sean @ KingdomBookBlog, gave me a fabulous reason to think about books by tapping me for this “My Intimidating TBR” book tag. If you would like to join in the fun, please consider yourself tagged!

1.) What book have you been unable to finish?

I’m sorry to say my only DNF of the past year was a book many people adore, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han.

2.) What book have you yet to read because you just haven’t had the time?

So many books fall into this category! I’ll go with Legend by Marie Lu because I really want to read it! In fact, it’s been sitting in a TBR stack right here on my desk beside where I’m typing at this very moment, but poor Legend hasn’t made it to the top yet.

3.) What book have you yet to read because it’s a sequel?

I don’t think my blog would be my blog if I didn’t mention V.E. Schwab in at least every other post so, yes, the book I read because it was a sequel was A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab. 🙂

4.) What book have you yet to read because it’s a new release?

If I positively can’t wait to read a new release, I do this silly thing called BUY THE BOOK. However, there is a new book I’m dying to read but can’t since it’s not scheduled for release until September 2016–The Reader by Traci Chee. Protagonist Sefia vows to save her kidnapped relative, but rescue means learning to read in a world where literacy is forbidden.  A sample chapter is available here–you’ll need to scroll past several other sample chapters to get to it.

5.) What book have you yet to read because you read a book by the same author and didn’t like it?

I can’t remember a specific book I went out of my way to avoid because it was written by an author whose writing I didn’t care for.

6.) What book have you yet to read because you aren’t in the mood?

Hmm, good question. Probably The Lemoncholy Life of Annie Aster by Scott Wilbanks. It’s the kind of whimsical, fantastical, well-written story I would enjoy, but something about the dense typeface gives me pause.

7.) What book have you yet to read because it’s humongous?

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. At 579 pages it isn’t ridiculously long, but I’m a little on the fence about reading it–if it were shorter I would fall off the fence on the side of reading it. 🙂

8.) What book have you yet to read because it was a cover buy with bad reviews?

I adore pretty book covers but don’t buy books purely based on them.

9.) Which book on your TBR is the most intimidating to you?

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson.

  2. Eve, what a great tag and I’ll definitely do this one soon! I’ve just got a couple of posts in the pipeline, one which is also a book list. I love the cover for ‘The Reader’ – one of those book I’d have to pick up and have a closer look at. As for typeface so so important! Looking back at my older books I’m surprised I ever read them as they were so dense and tiny – we are spoilt these days but so much easier to read!

  4. Hahaha To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is actually on my May TBR! I hope that I enjoy it more then you as it seems really cute and fluffy!
    The Reader does sounds so interesting! Not just because the murder and the kidnap but a book in a illiterate society? INTRIGUING…

  5. Ooh The Reader sounds fantastic! Adding to my TBR 🙂 I also initially DNF’d To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before – I couldn’t get into it, and felt the main character seemed so much younger than she was supposed to be. But I gave it another go at a later date and ended up quite enjoying it 🙂 It’s one to read if you want something light and easy to read.

  6. I really liked Discovery of Witches when I read it, however, I disliked the second and third book in the series. It reads very quickly and is actually pretty light reading. I’m in the same situation you are with A Gathering of Shadows. I feel like it deserves my full attention. I’m determined to get it done this month thought. Good luck with reading all of the books! You have my support! 😀

    • Right, Madeline? Must get my hands on this book! An Instagram photo from Y’all West showed stacks of copies of The Reader, and I was wishing so hard I could reach right through the screen and grab a copy. XD

  8. You haven’t read To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before! 😦 That’s unfortunate. I suppose I can understand. Although I loved it, it is a rather quick, light read, and not the book to read if you’re looking for something with a lot of substance. :-)It took me forever to read the Legend series as well; I actually still have yet to read the third book in the series.
    The Reader and A Discovery of Witches both look super good as well! I will definitely have to check those out. 🙂

  9. I also own and plan to read ‘A Discovery of Witches’ but the size puts me off too… it means I keep straying to other unread books instead that are less intimidating. I will read it at some point though!

  10. I haven’t read To All the Boys I Love Before but I did read Jenny Han’s Summer trilogy and didn’t think it was the cutest thing that was ever written like some other readers. So I can relate! As for Legend and Mistborn… I really want to read those, too. I agree, Mistborn is massive so I’ve put it on the backburner for now, hehe. 😛 And A Gathering of Shadows! Ah, what a fab sequel. ❤

    I’ve mostly seen positive reviews for the Jenny Han book. What about it did you not enjoy?

    Noooo, don’t be intimidated by Mistborn! It’s actually one of his most accessible novels. Yes, the world is complex and very large, but it’s such a joy to read. I PROMISE! 😀

    • I totally believe you about Mistborn. I plan to try again in the summer because I WANT to like and appreciate all the amazingness that is this book. As for All the Boys I’ve Loved, I don’t know how to say this politely. . .the narrator’s voice was saccharine sweet and, relative to the mood I was apparently in at the time, insipid.
