Hmmm this is hard! Does Daughter of Smoke and Bone count- the writing is lovely in that. I’m not sure if that’s the best answer- I’m sure I can come up with something better! (This is the kind of thing that I’ll get an answer too in the middle of the night and just think “ah that’s what I should have said”)

Hmm how about We Were Liars? Not sure that’s what you were thinking of but it’s beautifully written and very lyrical.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is on my TBR, but I had no idea it had the lyrical kind of writing I’m in the mood for. I’m so excited to move that one up my list. Thanks!

No worries- I also think in terms of lyrical YA, Eva Ibbotson is always a good shout (my favourite’s The Secret Countess)

In terms of non-YA, I’d probably suggest something like Memoirs of a Geisha or a Thousand Splendid Suns- don’t know if any of these recommendations are good, but hopefully something’ll work. And I think Daughter of Smoke and Bone definitely has that kind of beautiful writing- it’s surprising cos I wasn’t expecting it, and very few books of that genre are like that, so it surprised me that way. I think We Were Liars by E Lockhart would fit the bill. Or I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson. Both very poetic, but so different.

We Were Liars is a good example of the kind of book I’m looking for. I’ve read that one but not I’ll Give You the Sun. It’s high time I read my first Jandy Nelson book. Thanks for the recommendation!

Sadly, nothing comes to mind, but I’d like to read something like that, too. I see someone recommended All the Bright Places, which I’ve just brought home from the library, so I’m going to have a close look at that one.

I seem to have been reading quite a lot of atmospheric books lately, so there’s a few books that come to mind:
Stardust by Neil Gaiman is the first, though I wouldn’t really consider it to be YA… & A Thousand Nights by E.K. Johnston and Lorali by Laura Dockrill both had a really lovely, dream-like quality to them as well. 🙂

I would totally recommend Daughter of Smoke and Bone and I haven’t read this one but I’ve heard so many great things about the magical realism and writing in The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows by Ava Lavender. And this is not YA but The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is like the epitome of dreamy and lyrical!

Great suggestions! I’m picking up The Night Circus from the library today, and DOS&B is looking like a must-read, too. The prose in Ava Lavender definitely had a lyrical quality.

Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier, it’s beautiful!! Some of the words are expressed so delicately and it has such a sweet romance story (and the cover alone is to die for).

I don’t know about the dreamy part, but I enjoyed “The Bone Season” by Samantha Shannon, and “Icy Sparks” by Gwyn Hyman Rubio.

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Adieh, Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge, and An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir bring to my mind lyrical style writing. These are YA fantasy though and seeing the comments above, it looks like you’re leaning toward YA Contemporary.
